Are you feeling lucky?

Are you feeling lucky?

Everywhere you look … it’s green!

If you’ve been out and about today, you’ve likely run into a few folks wearing green from head to toe.  March 17th commemorates Saint Patrick, the most commonly recognized of the patron saints of Ireland.  Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official “feast day” in the early seventeenth century and has gradually become a celebration of Irish culture around the world.  Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador and in Montserrat.

Did you know that the original colour associated with Saint Patrick was blue?  Well, over the years the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick’s day grew.  Now all we think about is shamrocks, green beer, green attire and parades.  In fact, one of the longest-running Saint Patrick’s Day parades in North America occurs each year in Montreal!  The parade have been held there continuously since 1824.

Did you know the Toronto Maple Leafs were once known as the Toronto St. Patricks? It’s true!  From 1919 to 1927 they wore green jerseys and were called the Toronto St. Patricks.  Interestingly enough, in 1999, when the Maple Leafs played on Saint Patrick’s Day, they wore the green St. Patrick’s day-themed retro uniforms.
