November is Osteoporosis Month.

November is Osteoporosis Month.

Fact: 1 in 4 women and at least 1 in 8 men over 50 have Osteoporosis.

According to Osteoporosis Canada, Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. This leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture (broken bones), particularly of the hip, spine and wrist.  Osteoporosis is often known as “the silent thief” because bone loss occurs without symptoms. Osteoporosis is sometimes confused with osteoarthritis, because the names are similar. Osteoporosis is a bone disease; osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints and surrounding tissue.

Almost 2 million Canadians are living with osteoporosis.  No single cause for osteoporosis has been identified and it can strike at any age.

How Strong Are Your Bones?

Assessing your risk and testing for bone loss are the keys to diagnosing osteoporosis.  For more information about Osteoporosis, treatments, support groups, etc. please visit the Osteoporosis Canada website at www.osteoporosis.ca

Take care of your bones and your health.
