06 May Happy Mother’s Day from all of us to you!
“Youth fades. Love droops.
The leaves of friendship fall.
A mother’s secret hope outlines them all.“
Oliver Wendell Holmes
It’s no surprise that celebrations of mothers and motherhood occur throughout the world. In fact, many of these have histories can be traced back to ancient festivals. There is evidence of mother goddess worship in the ancient world, dating back as far as 6.000 BC and many mother goddess shrines could be found in ancient times in Asian minor. In 1912, Anna Jarvis of the USA, trademarked the phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s Day”, and created the Mother’s Day International Association.
“While we honor all our mothers
with words of love and praise.
While we tell about their goodness
and their kind and loving ways.
We should also think of Grandma,
she’s a mother too, you see….
For she mothered my dear mother
as my mother mothers me.”

Mother’s Day in Canada is also celebrated on the second Sunday in May – that’s this weekend! It typically involves small celebrations and gift-giving to one’s mother, grandmother, or other important female figures in one’s family. So for all the mother’s, grandmother’s and important female figures in one’s family, we say thank you for all you do every minute of every day. Your strength is an inspiration and your goodness is your greatness.
On behalf of Brampton Meals on Wheels, we wish you a Happy Mother’s Day today and always.
