It’s time to celebrate Labour!

It’s time to celebrate Labour!

Dare we say it… summer is almost over!

We’ve had the most amazing summer – weather wise.  There were a few wicked storms along the way but, overall, it was sunny, warm and lovely.  And it looks like Mother Nature is still trying to hang on to the dog days of summer and we are grateful for that.  And, it’s the last weekend of the CNE too!  Enjoy the rides and look up to catch the air show.

Here we are on the heals of the Labour Day long weekend.   Labour Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in Canada since the 1880s. The origins of Labour Day in Canada can be traced back to December 1872 when a parade was staged in support of the Toronto Typographical Union’s strike for a 58-hour work-week.  Those were the days.  And today, it’s important to recognize and celebrate the folks that make Brampton Meals on Wheels such a wonderful organization.

First, a special thanks goes out to Karen, Bonnie, Rosa and Flora.  This team works hard 52 weeks of the year to ensure the Brampton Meals on Wheels program runs smoothly.  They are professional, courteous and dedicated people. They also work closely with the Peel Manor team, offer training and coordinate schedules with all our Volunteers and, more importantly, manage the needs of our clients.  Thanks for all your hard work.

Secondly, we’d like to acknowledge all the efforts of our Board of Directors.  Thanks to Ron Snow, President of the Brampton Meals on Wheels Board and his team for all they do to make things happen and make the changes needed to deliver better services and solutions to our clients.

Thirdly, we’d like to give a special thanks to all the Volunteer Drivers.  Without them, it would not be possible to deliver over 40,000 nutritious meals to clients in need in Brampton, Bramalea and local surrounding areas.  Rain or shine, our Volunteer Drivers deliver hope, friendly smiles and meals to those in need.

Holiday Hours – Closed for Labour Day

Brampton Meals on Wheels will be closed on Monday, September 5th but we will start taking orders and delivering again on Tuesday, September 6th.  If you have a question or an inquiry, please click on our contact page and send us a note.  We will reply back to you promptly when we return to the office on Tuesday.

Older Adult Volunteering Event

Here’s an exciting event happening in town.  On September 14th at 10:30am, come and learn about the 120 agencies in your community that are looking for volunteers. From tree-planting to delivering meals, painting projects to tutoring reading, there is something for everyone. This is a special invitation for older adults who have never volunteered before to come and learn how volunteering works. Hosted by the the Older Adult Volunteer Program at Volunteer MBC.  For more information, contact Jennifer at 905-238-2622.

Next week, the kids are back to school and we encourage everyone to S-L-O-W DOWN in the school zones especially.   We hope you all have a wonderful long weekend.  Relax ~ you deserve it!
